What is a hydraulic filter and reasons for using it

1. What is a hydraulic filter?
  Hydraulic filter is a component of hydraulic system used to continuously remove contaminants in hydraulic oil. This process will purify the hydraulic oil and protect the system from damage caused by particulate matter. According to fluid compatibility, application type pressure drop, operating pressure, size, design, etc., select the type of hydraulic filter for a specific application.
  Each hydraulic system will contain some basic hydraulic filter components, such as filter head, filter bowl, filter element and bypass valve. The filter head can have inlet/outlet connections of different sizes. It allows contaminated fluid to enter and filtered fluid to leave. The filter bowl is located inside the housing that is threaded with the filter head, and it will protect the filter element by controlling the fluid flow. This element is considered to be the most important component to maintain the filter media to remove contaminants. The bypass valve may be a safety valve, if the dirt accumulation in the filter increases, the safety valve opens to allow the hydraulic oil to flow directly.

  Hydraulic filters are located in different parts of the hydraulic system to prevent pollutant particles from entering the system. Air filters, suction filters, pressure filters, oil return filters and offline filters are some common hydraulic filters.
1) The air filter is operating a breathing system for hydraulic applications, that is, sucking air in and out.
2) The suction filter/hydraulic pump filter function is used as a hydraulic oil purification component before the hydraulic pump.
3) The pressure filter is placed after the hydraulic pump to process system pressure and flow.
4) The oil return filter purifies the hydraulic oil before returning to storage.
5) Offline/kidney circuit/circulation filter is a small independent subsystem composed of filter, pump, motor and hardware connection.
  Except for the offline filter, the basic working principle of the hydraulic filter is similar. Generally, the working fluid in the hydraulic system will enter through the inlet of the hydraulic filter, and be pumped out through the outlet of the hydraulic system after being filtered. As a result of continuous operation, the deposition of dirt particles at the inlet of the filter element will create a pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the filter. When the bypass relief valve senses this pressure difference, the valve will open and direct the fluid from the inlet to the outlet by issuing an instruction to replace/clean the filter.

2.  Why use hydraulic filter?
  Hydraulic filters are mainly used in various hydraulic systems in the industry. These filters have many advantages to ensure the safe operation of hydraulic systems. Some of the advantages of hydraulic oil filters are listed below.
1) Eliminate the presence of foreign matter in hydraulic oil.
2) Protect the hydraulic system from the hazards of particulate pollutants.
3) Improve overall efficiency and productivity.
4) Compatible with most hydraulic systems.
5) Low maintenance cost.
6) Extend the service life of the hydraulic system.
