How is metal honeycomb made?

Honeycomb core material is the core component of aluminum honeycomb core, and it is also one of the important factors to ensure its light weight and high strength. Common metal honeycomb core materials include stainless steel,aluminum, polyurethane, ceramics, etc. Among them, aluminum honeycomb core materials are widely used due to their high strength, high stiffness, good water resistance and other characteristics. Aluminum honeycomb core has been widely used in construction, transportation and other fields due to its light weight, high strength, good thermal insulation performance and other characteristics. In the field of construction, aluminum honeycomb core is often used in exterior curtain walls, roofs, interior decoration and sound insulation; in the field of transportation, it is used as aerospace, automobiles, railways and ships, greatly improving the load-bearing capacity and economic benefits.

How to make metal honeycomb core?
Forming method: First, make the aluminum foil into wavy strips, then glue the wavy strips to form a laminate, and then use fine sand to form an metal honeycomb core block. This method is only used for alloy foils with relatively large thickness or greater rigidity, or unique metal honeycomb core sandwich panels that are not regular hexagons.

Stretching method: First, apply sealing strips to the aluminum foil, then laminate the aluminum foil, rivet them into layers, and then stretch them into metal honeycomb core blocks. Generally, regular hexagonal or square honeycombs are made using this method.

The process flow of making metal honeycomb panels by stretching method:
1. Carry out foil surface treatment. The degreasing treatment before gluing is generally carried out by organic solvent vapor degreasing, acid treatment, etc. In order to ensure the strength and durability of the aluminum foil, the aluminum foil can also be chemically oxidized, passivated, phosphorus treated, etc.

2. Carry out aluminum foil gluing. Gluing includes vertical strip gluing and horizontal bar gluing.

3. Carry out aluminum foil lamination and curing. The glued aluminum foil is stacked according to the required number of pages, and then heated, pressed and cured in a plate assembly machine or autoclave.

Stretching and forming of metal honeycomb core

There are two main plans for this step: stretching first and then processing the appearance design and processing the appearance design first and then stretching. The appearance curvature of the aluminum honeycomb panels structure can be pre-deformed. Processing the appearance design first and then stretching is generally suitable for processing aluminum honeycomb core blocks with equal cross-sections or straight busbar shapes.

Characteristics of metal honeycomb panel
(1) Lightweight, high specific strength, especially high bending stiffness. The bending stiffness of aluminum honeycomb sheets of the same quality is about 5 times that of aluminum alloy materials.

(2) It has very high surface flatness and high temperature reliability, is easy to shape and not easy to deform. Aluminum honeycomb sheets can not only be made into flat panels, but also can be made into hyperbolic and single-curved control panels, which are easy to disassemble after making car parts.

(3)Good corrosion resistance, insulation performance and environmental adaptability, can adapt to various extreme application environments of railway EMU trains and passenger cars; in addition, according to needs, metal honeycomb panel can be treated with surface spraying or surface adhesive fireproof board to achieve better decoration and fire safety.

(4) Unique resilience, metal honeycomb panel can absorb vibration energy, and has good sound insulation and noise reduction effect.

(5) The smoke density after the fire meets the high-level international railway fire protection standards and has good self-extinguishing properties; the heat release of metal honeycomb panel is relatively low, and a fireproof layer can be formed to reduce the release of thick smoke and harmful gases, and has excellent environmental protection performance.

(6) Excellent molding process performance, metal honeycomb panel can meet the requirements of complex shapes and high reliability requirements of railway vehicle interior window parts.
